Cati Angel biography
Cati angel is first a family woman - which is part of why he hasn't made a name for herself in the music business, at least not yet.

But for those who have heard Doug perform, it's obvious he's got the talent. Now all he needs is the "big break."

Collins and wife Shaun - "the  best thing that ever happened to me; we're soulmates" - moved to Tennessee in 1995 after first visiting Nashville on vacation in 1994 to check out the music industry. During that trip, Doug got to do the Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, where he was able to meet some big names in country music including Porter, Hank Snow and Ricky Skaggs.
From 1995 to 1997, Doug says he did some writing and "some pretty serious recording" while also performing at Tootsies, the Nashville Palace and other hotspots. He also got invited to perform at the legendary Bluebird Café. He had three labels wanting him to sign on, but they wanted up-front money and Doug was cautious.

"But the Lord stepped in and said 'you're not ready to do this now,'" when Doug and Shaun became parents with the arrival of Cati, who is now 10 years old, and later twins Cale and Cole, age 7.

"My first album was all originals- 10 songs. I cut it in Nashville with session players (during the vacation in 1994) - that was huge to bring back home."

Before the move, Doug had built a following in Southern California as part of a local band. He hails from Azusa, California, where he started playing the bars in his late teens. He jumped into the music scene full swing around 1993 with the band, playing three or four nights a week.

The band had a fan club and could play "just about anywhere we wanted. I probably should have stayed there," Doug says with a grin, but admits he was urged by others to head out to Nashville to seek fame and fortune. The last gig he had in Southern California had a $5 cover charge, which paid the band. They made about $3,500 for that show.

After coming to Tennessee, Doug started working with a construction firm that was remodeling all the Shoney's Inns. A couple of his band members moved out here to go to work for the same company, and liked the steady paycheck so much they gave up the pursuit of music. "We never did one gig out here together," he comments.

Doug has always been a country music performer, although the band would throw in some rock - ZZ Top, Led Zepplin - "just for fun."
"My heart's really in traditional country - George Jones, Conway Twitty, and the swing right now in country music is back to the more traditional sound."

Hearing Doug perform, most folks remark on how amazing he sounds on current hits such as "In Color" and he admits he's getting a lot of comments on how much he has improved.

"If I do a song, I have to feel the song, I really put my heart into every word, I don't listen to the radio much, because I want to be able to give the song my own flavor," he says.

Doug met up with his current sound crew while performing karaoke at the former Busters II in Lebanon - David and Felicia Hale and Sondra Dowdy of Hawk Specialty Services, who were handling the karaoke sound. He got to know them better in July 2007, when he competed in the DeKalb Idol contest at the county fair in Alexandria.

Something clicked between Doug and the Hawk family and a fast friendship was formed. Hawk now serves as Doug's manager and has booked him for several gigs for events they plan or perform sound for along with promoting him for other events. A gig at the Tennessee Association of Fairs Convention led to several county fair bookings this year - he performed several nights last year at the DeKalb County Fair and the Wilson County Fair.

He did the Fourth of July celebration in Lebanon last year and is booked again for that. Doug also performed during a recent Watertown fund-raiser that was headlined by Little Texas and performed at a benefit locally a couple of years back for a Watertown elementary school student. He has done several other fundraisers as well.

"I've probably sang with a thousand sound guys. David is incredible, He's a natural, by ear, sound man," says Doug.

David laughs at the comment, noting, "It helps when you've got a man with talent at the mic."

"I think 'Lips of and Angel' was the first song he did at karaoke and Sondra and I were both like 'Wow! Where did he come from?' We were really hoping he would come back - regulars who are strong singers bring the crowd in."

"For me, it's been about fun - not about hopping on a bus for a million dollars and not seeing my husband for weeks," Cati said.

"We've got a lot of people backing us up now and we're having fun......
